History of the Neurotoxicity Society

In 1998, the concept of a Neurotoxicity Society was conceived when Dr. Richard Kostrzewa became Editor-in-Chief of the journal Neurotoxicity Research. This concept was further developed at a meeting organized by Dr. Segura-Aguilar in 2001 “Neurotoxicity as a Mechanism for Neurodegenerative Disorders: Basic and Clinical Aspects” in Pucon, Chile.  Within input from all attendees, the first Council was formed with Dr. Kostrzewa elected as President.   Within the year, the Neurotoxicity Society was formed and established as a 503-C non-profit organization registered in the United States.  The first official meeting of the Society was held in 2003 in La Serena, Chile.  From the discussions of a number of the original stakeholders,  a primary objective of the society identified was to foster the development of neurotoxicity research with cross-collaboration between the United States, Europe, and Latin America.  It continues to encourage interactive discussions on basic mechanisms, clinical implications, and human health policies.  Over the years, the society has continued with biennial meetings and satellite meetings, primarily in South America and supported satellite meetings Internationally with other neuroscience societies. It has expanded communication and collaborations worldwide and sponsored trainees with travel grants and educational opportunities.
